Summary

A created hydraulic fracture results in a characteristic deformation pattern in the rock around the fracture. If you measure the hydraulic fracture-induced tilt (deformation) of the earth at several locations with an array of tiltmeters, this induced tilt reflects the geometry and orientation of the created hydraulic fracture.

Tilt is measured with high-precision devices, not unlike the bubble in a carpenter's level. When the sensor tilts, the resistance between the electrodes changes.
