Monitoring - Water Quality

Care should be taken to ensure that the water is not allowed to generate more particles after sampling.
If dissolved carbon dioxide can be released, sampling in a pressure bomb may be appropriate. As an alternative, acidifying the sample with a few ml of 10% HCl will also prevent further calcium carbonate precipitation.
Attempt to minimize oxidation. "...we recommend sampling into a reducing acid, such as erythorbic or citric acids, which will tend to keep the dissolved iron in solution. A concentration of 100 ppm is usually more than adequate providing analysis is carried out within an hour or two of sampling."

Ideally, oxygen content determinations should be conducted 'in-line' to avoid inevitable exposure to oxygen when taking samples.

Visually/optically for larger particulates.
X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineralogy.
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry ("EDAX") for high magnification optical evaluation and for elemental characterization.
