Example - Fracturing in a Moderate/High Permeability Reservoir

Introduction

The is a sandstone reservoir with a permeability of between 1 and 2 darcies. Produced water was injected in the far flank of the reservoir at a depth of 1800 mTVD over a zone of 110 meters. The injector was cased and perforated at 6 spf at a phase angle of 60°. Total suspended solids were high and the oil-in-water varied from 50 to 250 ppm.

The injector was initially thought to be under matrix injection, but further data analysis indicated that it injector was fractured. Fracture plugging and propagation were the main relevant mechanisms for this injector. An acid treatment may have been successful by cleaning out the injection string.

View Figure 1:  Pressure (red) and Injectivity Index (blue) with time. Note the acid treatment.
